August 21, 7:30pm- Derek Piotr

August 21, 7:30pm

Please join us in welcoming back Derek Piotr to our community!

Building on his recent DJ sets which car-crash everything from white label early aughts remixes to field recordings of Malaysian healing ceremonies to his own fieldwork documenting non musicians singing traditional songs, Derek Piotr presents a first look at a new work, Universal Healer, garbled alongside recordings taken from his fieldwork-archive.com repository and diluted by pieces from across his 15+ year solo career.

This will be his first performance at our new location of 162 James Street!

WEIRD MUSIC NIGHT

SATURDAY JUNE 20
7:00pm - 10:00pM

Florian @ Yale Quantum Institute

Like weird music? The Yale Quantum Institute got you covered with a free and open to all musical set/performance made with quantum computers! Quantum Sound, the first-ever music created and performed directly from measurements of superconducting qubits, created by YQI Artist-in-Residence Spencer Topel in 2019, will be featured at Weird Music Night. If you missed the live performance in 2019, this is your chance to catch it again, with a brand new light show/weird performance by YQI AiR curator Florian Carle.

BUY IT..BURN IT…

Colors are ideas, notes, genres and timbres whose shifting proportions are translated into music: a transient auditory summary of a specific time and place. Two knobs abstractly guide millions of probabilistic interactions while unpredictable moments evolve into an unforeseeable future. Should be fun.  burnitbuyit.com

Brian Ember

“Brian is one of the weirdest weirdos in the best and most brilliant way. Perfectly marinated in a strange broth of complex personal philosphy and operatic inclinations. Seasoned with seasoning. Grilled to perfection. A creative cannibal’s favorite dish…best served on a Weird Music Night. HELLO.” - John O’Donnell, Curator of Weird Music Night

Ember studied classical composition at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, where he also hosted a poetry open mic on the Lower East Side, joined more choirs, and continued studying voice. His classical training led him to create a string-quartet rock band called the Tet Offensive, which began as a cover band and emerged into a songwriting vehicle for Ember over the past several years. After starting a family, he moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where he has been for a startlingly long time.  Now Brian Ember does whatever the fuck he wants. As it turns out, that just means he’s singing a lot and writing string quartets and pop records. Frustratingly self-aware at how not dangerous he is, he makes up for it with the occasional swear word.

The WMD (Wilcox/Malec Duo)

WMD is a collaborative experimental music project featuring Connecticut-based musicians Jeff Wilcox and Adam Malec. They frequently perform at regional avant-garde and experimental showcases.

SPONTENTION -- intentionality spontaneous.

In response to Chaos with a side of spaghetti curated by Emily Weiskopf

Featuring the New London Drone Orchestra, a group that  collectively improvises sustained, layered, gradually evolving, timeless sound that can be an accompagnement to any poetry or performance of the evening should that be welcome.

This night is inspired and in dialogue with the ongoing show curated by Emily Weiskopf.

"We are hurtling toward the unknown. The unrelatable. The bizarre and disorienting shape of this moment. The endless news cycle feeds instability at every turn, every click. Comfort slips from under our feet, our eyes look for the sun. What once felt real, what once felt safe, is gone. Poof. In the wind.
Chaos with a Side of Spaghetti is response and survival. The artists laugh in the face of impossible odds. You take our healthcare, we pick up the brush. You wage wars, we build worlds. For every right stripped away, there is a video, a painting, an assemblage. We meet the absurd with humor, comfort, vices, and despair, still searching for beauty, for joy and laughter. Like spaghetti thrown at the wall. We’ll see what sticks. Today, if only to take your mind off things for a moment."

Open mic and collective improvisation is prompted from this ethos.

Please bring nonperishable items for the CT Food Bank. List of most helpful items coming soon!

Artist Talk: Moderated by Akiya McKnight with Diana Abouchacra, Lauren Flaaen and Dario Mohr

Akiya McKnight is a multidisciplinary storyteller, producer, and art curator dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices across television, podcasting, and the visual arts. With over eight years of experience in the entertainment industry, she has collaborated with major studios and networks including Tyler Perry Studios, AMC, Warner Brothers, and The Gersh Agency. Her creative portfolio includes the short films SERVED, Black Mask, Drift, Bone Deep, Daddy’s Home, and Monet, as well as branded content for the Recording Academy.

A lifelong lover of the arts, Akiya’s curatorial practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for cultural institutions like Yale, The Met, and MoMA, which she frequented from a young age. In 2015, she co-founded Creative Society CT, an art collective that connected emerging artists with local businesses through curated events. Her debut solo exhibition, Black Love is Liberation: A Visual Timeline Through the Ages (2023), was met with critical acclaim and is currently being developed into a touring show across the U.S. and abroad. She is also curating a forthcoming exhibit on grief, exploring healing, identity, and community.

Based in Los Angeles and Connecticut, Akiya remains committed to telling stories that reflect the full spectrum of women's and minority experiences. Beyond her creative work, she is deeply engaged in community service and advocacy. She previously served on the board of Forever Family, a nonprofit supporting children of incarcerated parents, and currently holds board positions at the Michael’s Daughter Foundation and the Ely Center of Contemporary Art.

Diana Abouchacra is a Lebanese American mixed-media artist who received her M.F.A. from Louisiana State University and her B.F.A. from the University of Connecticut. She works in a variety of mediums including video, printmaking, installation, and sound art. Diana loves incorporating experimental strategies and techniques into her studio practice, with recurring themes of grief, vulnerability, ephemerality, multiplicity, and transformation.

Dario Mohr is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and nonprofit leader who creates altar-inspired installations, sculptures, and public works rooted in ancestral veneration and indigenous traditions. He splits his time between NYC and New Haven, CT. His work has been presented at venues such as the Jacob Javits Center, Lewis Latimer House Museum, Wave Hill, Brooklyn Children's Museum and internationally at Tafaria Castle in Kenya, supported by residencies, fellowships, and grants from organizations including EFA, LMCC, ApexArt, MYSCA and NEA. He is also the founder and Director of AnkhLave Arts Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to amplifying the voices of artists of color and indigenous communities worldwide.

Lauren Flaaen holds an MFA from Yale School of Art in Painting and Printmaking. Their work has been exhibited at the Metal Museum, Memphis; the Logan Center, and the Ely Center of Contemporary Art. ‘My artistic practice centers around transforming everyday objects into anthropomorphic forms, where the material world splits and reconverges, entangling matter to flow, move, and propel forward. I cut, paint, stitch, construct found objects, building materials, and steel into corporeal assemblages. The materials and processes I use symbolize the cyclical nature of transformation, where rupture and repair coexist, responding to the embodied and disembodied experiences inscribed with societal expectations and norms.’

5:30- Melody Green performs

- PERFORMANCE - SPOKEN WORD - MUSIC -

Please join us for Open Space Evening (mic & more) featuring expressions for the sake of being alive & together, organized by Danielle Giroux.

Immerse yourself in a performance by Melody Green in response to the installation "What Remains Tied: Bound in Belonging" by Diana Abouchacra.

Following Green’s performance, stay for an Open Space Evening where we make room for others to bring music, poetry, dance, and more into the gallery. You are invited to join in whatever compassionate way calls you. An offering for cathartic connection, imperfection, sharing from the archives, and all that exists in between.

The origin of this comes from Abouchacra''s installation process that brought together artists to bind and reflect, mirroring the spirit of Green's collaborations across alternative venues with  Giroux and others this past fall and winter. It comes from a deep well of inspiration from making space for collective ephemeral expression.

Opening Reception

Sunday, February 8, 1-3pm
162 James Street, New Haven

The Ely Center is pleased to present a group of four exhibitions on view from February 8- April 12, 2026 with an opening reception on Sunday, February 8, 1-3pm at the new location of 162 James Street, New Haven, CT. Together this group of exhibitions invite visitors to consider moments of transition not as rupture but as a space for connection.

Three solo shows by artists Diana Abouchacra, Lauren Flaaen and Dario Mohr, the Fall ’25 Keyhole Workspace cohort, use installation and transformed objects to examine how bodies, memories, and identities are mediated through structures that both protect and constrain.

Abouchacra’s What Remains Tied, Bound in Belonging offers an immersive installation on memory and care, combining sculptural “memory ties,” audio, and video to consider how belonging is formed over time.

Flaaen’s small tears, cuts and scribbles transforms domestic furniture into a bodily form, exploring vulnerability, protection, and transformation with her reupholstered couch installation.

In Ensconced, Mohr examines light, visibility, and power with illuminated glass cubes that frame Black male bodies in moments of concealment and revelation.

The use and transformation of fixtures, furniture, and unassuming kitchen materials creates an underlying theme of comfort, exposure, intimacy and power in the three artists’ exhibitions.

Intervals is a group exhibition presented by the volunteer artists and curators who comprise the Ely Center’s Curatorial and Program Advisory Committee. Reflecting on pauses, shifts, and in-between states, Intervals addresses moments of change—between places, roles, and aesthetics—while reinforcing long-term vision of inclusivity, diversity, and spaces built through collaboration.
