My art practice is rooted in concepts of map making and environmental issues, and their connections to aspects of our cultural & personal mythos. I'm fascinated by both the physics and the mythology of our connections to the planet: geological phenomena, the underlying structure of landscape, and the power of natural forces upon the land and sea. These small works are based on experiences during a month long residency in Iceland. The larger work (Ships of State…) is a musing on the fragility of our political systems within our already fragile ecosystem. The mixed media techniques I use include shwe chi doe Burmese tapestry making, for its tactile physicality, appropriate to describing the tangible materiality of the natural world.

Leila Daw is an environmentalist, feminist, and artist, with a studio in New Haven, CT. She is Professor Emerita, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. Her artwork has been featured throoughout the U.S.A., Europe, and SE Asia. Permanent public installations can be seen at Bradley International Airport, Hartford; the Wilson Branch of New Haven Public Library; Northwestern CT Community College; and the St. Louis light rail system. Pieces are in the collections of Yale University, the Cincinnati Art Museum, DeCordova Museum, Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Boston Public Library, St. Louis Art Museum, Housatonic Museum of Art, Clay Center of Charleston WV (her home town), and corporate & private collections. Plus there is a quantity of work in her studio, increasing all the time.
