A message from our director This summer, ECOCA’s Summer Apprenticeship Program (SAP) offers NHPS Teen Artists something rare: paid time, dedicated studio space and intensive mentorship. Led by artist Kat Wiese, SAP is a three-week program (weekdays July 6-24, 12-4pm) focused on paper making, printmaking, bookbinding, and exploring themes of safety through material practice. Using The Green Book as a (re)source, artists will work hands-on with materials while engaging questions of care, protection, and memory. This year’s exhibition will be accompanied with an essay by Ian Dudley and a poem by New Haven’s own Poet Laureate Yexandra Diaz! The program culminates in a public reception on July 24th. Most importantly: participants are paid for their time. This is not just learning but rather artistic labor recognized and supported.Programs like SAP exist because of community support.ECOCA is currently working toward securing a permanent home, operating out of CitySeed’s building in Fair Haven for now. We’ve raised over $500,000 toward a building purchase, and during the Great Give we are raising $15,000 to unlock a $5,000 match and reach our $20,000 goal.
