Dear Friends, You are warmly invited to Sunday’s opening of WABI Gallery’s exhibition, Truth in Three Colors, with a public reception from 3-6pm. WABI is an exciting new commercial gallery in development, slated to open in a dedicated space in downtown New Haven next year and is the brainchild of artist Kim Weston. Because ECOCA postponed the Embodied Knowledge exhibition to the summer, we had several empty galleries, and passed along the opportunity to WABI to use the space. If you have been following our recent communications, you are aware that Ely House is about to enter a period of review and reflection on recent missteps in our work and governance processes. We apologize for our oversights and the harm we have caused. As we work to learn, improve, and better respond to the community, our efforts are centered on a series of Board and volunteer DEI and Safe Space trainings. In order to to carve out the time and focus for this necessary internal work, we’ve put a number of projects on hold, including postponing the Embodied Knowledge exhibition to the summer. Part of the plan now is to summon the theme of WABI’s exhibition to create a space for listening and learning from the grievances that have been shared with us, with the conversations led and facilitated by friends of the arts in New Haven. Truth in Three Colors is curated by Kim Weston. The title of the exhibition is inspired by legendary jazz artist Charles Mingus’s song Portrait in Three Colors. There are two sides to every story, and then there is the truth. The nine artists in the show illuminate what is true from their gaze and social circumstances, and many are represented here with work that hasn’t been seen by New Haven audiences before. Featured artists include Greg Aimé, Junior Charles, Tracie Cheng, Dooley-O, Howard el-Yasin, Bud Glick, Leonard Harmon, Linda Vauters Mickens, and Aisha Nailah.
