The woods and wetlands at Riverbound Farm are not to be missed! Eric Eichorn will talk about the preserve's history and wildlife, and his involvement with the Audubon Society.

Long Water Land is a free community education and art-making series along the Quinnipiac River hosted by the Ely Center of Contemporary Art, New Haven Sketchers, and other partners in Summer 2024.  Collaborating groups will provide introductions to each site from historical, cultural, and/or ecological perspectives. The project will focus on building community, and observing, interacting with, and reflecting on our shared landscape through art-making. The series will be commemorated with an anthology of sketches and an accompanying exhibition.

This is meet up 5 of 6- so make sure to come if you have wanted to join in but haven’t yet- the last site visit is July 27!

ECOCA is pleased to present “How did we get here?” an exhibition with artists whose work asks the viewer to look, then look again. Art builds a path between the personal and the universal: our collection spotlights the moments when that path can become a winding, narrative journey. “How did we get here?” is as important a question for the onlooker as “Where are we meant to go from here?” The work of art is a lens into the maker’s intentions, but the audience is already looking through many lenses at once: cultural, political, intersectional. It is in the second look–and beyond–that the viewer squints, considers angles, negotiates a way into the stories our featured works contain.

Light Bites by Global Local Gourmet

Noted painter Destiny Palmer leads the inaugural Summer Apprenticeship @ ECOCA, continuing a 23-year New Haven tradition. Unveiling set for July 26, 5- 7pm.

This summer, 12 New Haven public high school students are learning the art of mural making, working with New Haven native, Boston-based painter/educator Destiny Palmer.

For three intensive weeks, the students are working together to build out their vision for a mural that reflects their own perspective of the city. Palmers’ murals have been commissioned for numerous sites around Boston.

The students hail from: Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School, Hamden High School, Educational Center for the Arts, Hillhouse High School, Highville Change Academy, Metropolitan Business Academy, O.H. Platt High School, New Haven Academy, Wilbur Cross High School, and Shelton High School. This year’s participants are from Coop: Dominic Giglietti; from Hamden High and ECA: Soleil Nelson; from Hillhouse: David Coardes; from Highville: Alivia Patterson; from MBA: Adrian Gonzalez, Dezirae Pollard, Manny Pollard, and Elliana Hunte; from Platt: Solace Khuc; from NHA: Joey Esposito; from Wilbur Cross: River Ferrucci; and from Shelton: Merlin Shallow.

They were also mentored by recent School of the Museum of Fine Art alum painter Perla Mabel Ledesma.

Vertical Mural for Trumbull Street will be a 40-foot banner that transforms the façade of the historic Ely Center of Contemporary Art with references to some of New Haven’s most iconic features.

The Banner will remain on view at the Ely Center through fall 2024.

Explore the new Digital Grace exhibition color(less) curated by our spring SCSU Arts Administration Intern, Michelle Szabo.

“As I was thinking about this exhibit and ECOCA's overarching focus on environmental impact this year, I started thinking about a less talked-about pollution that we humans produce called light pollution. Light brings us many things including the ability to see color, color being the reflection of light. If there is little light, or extreme bright light, we see less saturation of color or more brightness of color until it becomes either black or white, respectively.” - Szabo

To fully experience the exhibition, it is best to be seen on your computer monitor or other personal device where you can adjust brightness, however this will also be displayed in the foyer of ECOCA.
